Lab Microbiologist

Role Overview

Responsible for ensuring product safety, quality, and regulatory compliance by monitoring microbial levels in raw materials, in-process products, and finished goods. Performs routine and specialized microbiological testing to detect pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, while also monitoring yeast and mold levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct microbiological testing of raw milk, in-process products, and finished goods (e.g., coliforms, yeast/mold, Listeria, Salmonella).
  • Perform environmental and equipment swabbing to detect microbial contamination.
  • Manage and test microbial cultures used in fermentation processes.
  • Ensure compliance with HACCP, GMP, and SQF food safety standards.
  • Calibrate laboratory equipment (pH meters, incubators, autoclaves).
  • Maintain laboratory inventory and manage hazardous waste disposal.
  • Record and maintain laboratory data and investigate out-of-specification results through root cause analysis.

Food Safety & Quality Compliance

  • Ensure adherence to SQF procedures and GMP standards.

  • Maintain product safety and quality throughout production.

  • Verify compliance with customer specifications.

  • Promote food safety practices across the workforce.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience in food manufacturing or food quality laboratories (dairy experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and laboratory testing procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and ability to work independently or in a team.

Work Environment

  • Physically demanding work that may include lifting, bending, and operating equipment.
  • Work takes place in clean, well-lit, and temperature-controlled environments.
  • Strict adherence to workplace safety procedures is required.
  • Typical workload ranges from 40–60 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform repetitive manual tasks, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Correctable 20/20 vision and the ability to distinguish colors used in labeling systems.
  • Ability to hear and recognize different operational sounds.
