Job Description

Position Summary

The role of Senior Chemist II requires skills in both practical and theoretical synthetic organic chemistry. The role is primarily laboratory based, conducting syntheses on existing products and devising and implementing syntheses for new products. A particular focus is driving improvement to our existing procedures with a view to maximising yields, increasing reproducibility, scaling and reducing manufacturing costs.

Key responsibilities

  • Completion of scheduled work is on time (as per Chemistry Schedule), within budget (as per batch cost) and within specification
  • Right first time (rework reduction, RFT)
  • On-Time Delivery in Full (OTIF)
  • Underlying chemical and physical principles of chemical and analytical procedures are understood prior to commencing assigned work
  • All reactions are monitored effectively to avoid work-up of incomplete reactions
  • All batch failures (yield, specification, reprocessing) and unexpected results are reported immediately to the Chemistry Manager
  • Opportunities for improving chemical procedure are identified and communicated
  • Custom synthesis/NPI projects (including design of synthetic routes, improvement of existing routes, syntheses, troubleshooting and optimisation of problematic steps) are efficiently and effectively completed.
  • Contributions are made to writing and revising of documented procedures
  • Records of work are complete and accurate.
  • Responsibility for specified area of the business
  • An ability to plan and manage CI (continuous improvement) projects
  • Support of the development of new products within the company
  • Accurate and timely recording, interpretation and reporting of all generated data
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant current literature and technical developments
  • Review, optimise and define manufacturing instructions to drive continuous improvement
  • All relevant environmental, health and safety regulations are complied with.

Meet the required key performance indicators as stated in KPI Bowler:

  • Right first time (RFT)
  • Delivery to plan (DTP, batches submitted to QC by assigned QC in date)
  • Productivity (no of batches completed per chemist per week)

Qualifications

Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Certifications

  • PhD or equivalent in a Chemistry 
  • Minimum of 3 years industrial experience or relevant postdoc or equivalent 
  • Project management experience
  • Ideally experience working in a quality led laboratory environment
  • Batch manufacture from <10 g to at least 1 kg
  • Experience in working on product development projects
  • Experience on working on contract/custom synthesis projects
  • Experience in process improvement projects including scale up
  • Experience in new product development projects
  • Desirable knowledge of oligonucleotide synthesis

Knowledge and experience in:

  • Synthetic organic chemistry
  • Setting up and working up reactions
  • Purification of materials (column chromatography, crystallisation, precipitation, distillation)
  • Analysis by TLC, HPLC, LCMS, NMR
  • Process improvement projects
