Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineering Lab Technician I provides technical support and assistance with teaching and research in the Mechanical Engineering (ME) department’s labs and machine shop at Villanova. This support includes assistance to students and faculty with academic and research projects, maintaining and updating laboratory and shop equipment and apparatuses, maintaining inventory, assisting with workflow in the machine shop. and providing additional assistance as needed. Duties And Responsibilities
Assist instructors and students in the set up and operation of laboratory experiments including mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation support. Assist in the upkeep, repair, renovation, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment within the department; attend necessary trainings and obtain required certifications to use equipment Assist in the fabricating of components and test specimens for students and faculty. Operate drills, saws, mills and other machine shop equipment. Maintaining inventory of common parts and materials, and ensuring stock is available for fabrication. Use University systems such as NovaBuy and NovaPay for purchases and requisitions. Maintaining a clean, secure, safe, organized laboratory environment for faculty, staff, and students. Collaborate with Lab Technician I, College Facilities Manager and other necessary constituents on lab capital expenditures and any relating installations, inventory practices and asset management, as well as general lab maintenance. Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
The individual must have an associate degree or vocational/technical school degree from an accredited institution required, with 1-3 years’ work experience separate from that gained as part of degree completion. The individual must be able to work independently as well as with others in a productive manner, and must have strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills. The individual must have basic mechanical lab experience and familiarity with machine shop practices, including knowledge of materials and proper specifications for fabrication of parts. General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and materials systems such as to provide advice and hands-on assistance with commercial or custom equipment and instrumentation required. Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical test tools also required.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred, with experience working in education-centric labs or environments a plus. Computer competency, including knowledge of 3D printing, G-code, NI LabView, and CNC Machining also a plus.
