This Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking an Early Professional, Civil Engineer for our Brentwood/Nashville or Knoxville, TN office, who would have the opportunity to work within a team-focused local environment, for a large global engineering firm. The candidate would provide support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for various transportation engineering projects in both the public and private sectors. Tasks may include basic assistance with the research, conceptual development, design, and constructability of roads, drainage systems, ITS, and bridges. Other tasks may include generating accurate and concise training and workflow documentation regarding standardized design software and specifications. This position is best suited for an entry level transportation engineer who is seeking an opportunity to be a part of a growing organization that works collaboratively to provide innovative solutions for our clients with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact

  • Develop 3D design models, calculations, sketches, plans, and estimates for various transportation improvement projects under the supervision of an experienced engineer.
  • Analyze data from surveys, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.    
  • Assist with the development of technologies, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with civil engineering design standards.
  • Verify the characteristics of a site and provide technical assistance on various engineering, design, and construction issues. 
  • Assist with technical reports, which could include summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, and software.
  • Assist technical staff with writing/reviewing design training manuals and workflow documentation to further advance the engineering industry. 
  • Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with design concepts, construction, mitigation and improvement activities, and remediation projects.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-discipline team of engineers to execute project work on various projects.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects. 
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, SUDA, ArcGIS).
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application of project work-related issues, plus desire to learn new technologies.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction, including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Analytical mindset with an ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Commitment to upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior design experience.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
