Position Summary
The Claims and Risk Manager is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the company’s workers’ compensation and liability claims programs. This role works closely with employees, supervisors, insurance carriers, third-party administrators (TPAs), legal counsel, and insurance brokers to ensure claims are managed effectively from incident through resolution.
The position also supports the company’s insurance renewal process, manages claims reporting and analysis, and helps identify opportunities to reduce risk exposure and improve safety outcomes across the organization.
Important Note: This role focuses on insurance claims administration and operational risk management related to workplace incidents and liability exposure. It is not an IT, cybersecurity, enterprise risk management (ERM), or information security risk position.
Key Responsibilities
Claims Management
- Manage workers’ compensation and general liability claims from initial incident through resolution.
- Serve as the primary liaison with insurance carriers, TPAs, and legal counsel regarding claims activity.
- Monitor claim status and ensure timely communication with adjusters, attorneys, and internal stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate claim documentation and internal records.
- Participate in claims review meetings with insurance carriers and brokers.
- Coordinate with HR and management regarding return-to-work programs and claim resolution.
Incident Investigation and Employee Interaction
- Assist with investigations of workplace incidents and accidents.
- Work with supervisors and employees to ensure accurate reporting and documentation of incidents.
- Coordinate information needed for claims handling and follow-up.
- Identify trends in claims activity and recommend improvements in safety or risk mitigation practices.
Insurance Program and Broker Coordination
- Work with insurance brokers to support annual insurance renewals.
- Compile claims data, loss runs, and exposure information for underwriters.
- Assist leadership and brokers in evaluating coverage structures and insurance program performance.
- Maintain relationships with insurance brokers, carriers, and risk service providers.
Risk Monitoring and Reporting
- Track claims activity, loss trends, and financial exposure related to workers’ compensation and liability incidents.
- Prepare reports and summaries for leadership related to claims performance and risk exposure.
- Support insurance audits and provide documentation as needed.
Compliance and Safety Support
- Stay informed on relevant workers’ compensation regulations and compliance requirements, including multi-state considerations.
- Support company initiatives to improve safety performance and reduce workplace incidents.
- Assist with interactions involving regulators such as OSHA when related to claims matters.
Required Qualifications
Experience
- 5+ years of experience managing workers’ compensation and/or liability claims.
- Experience working with insurance carriers, brokers, or third-party administrators (TPAs).
- Experience coordinating with legal counsel on claim-related matters.
- Experience supporting insurance renewals or claims reporting.
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong understanding of workers’ compensation claims processes.
- Knowledge of liability claims and incident investigation practices.
- Ability to manage multiple claims and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills when working with employees, management, insurers, and attorneys.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in business, finance, insurance, risk management, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in construction, infrastructure, or field operations environments.
- Experience working with multi-state workers’ compensation systems.
- Professional certifications in risk management or insurance are a plus.
